| Sir Robert Walpole | Nelson's mother Catherine was the great niece of Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister of England. His titles included Baron of Houghton, Viscount Walpole, and Earl of Orford. The living of Nelson's father at Burnham Thorpe was in the gift of the Earls of Orford. | ||||
| Uncle - Maurice Suckling | Maurice Suckling was the brother of Nelson's mother Catherine. He was a naval captain who had fought a famous sea battle in 1759 (coincidentally on 21 October, the same day on which Trafalgar would be fought). Following his mother's death, and a request from Nelson's father, Maurice took the 12 year-old Horatio on board his ship Raisonable in the Spring of 1771. | ||||
